Tommy Joe Martins' Back to Back Top 20s
March 30, 2019
Tommy Joe Martins, part-time driver of the number 99 for BJ McLeod Racing, started 24th at Texas Motor Speedway.
In first practice, Martins finished 26th and he didn't make any laps in the second practice.
On lap 1, the caution came out for the 51 of Jeremy Clements spinning out in the grass. On lap 24, Martins was 30th. At the end of stage 1, lap 45/200, Martins finished 30th and down a lap, as the 20 of Christopher Bell won the stage.
On lap 58, the caution came out for the 66 of Tyler Hill and the 52 of David Starr wrecking. On lap 65, the caution came out for the 12 of Brad Keselowski wrecking in the wall. With 10 laps to go, the 07 of Ray Black, Jr. wrecks hard into the wall to bring the caution out. Everyone but the 39 of Ryan Sieg, the 4 of Ross Chastain, and the 11 of Justin Haley pit. With 3 laps to go, the 39 of Sieg holds off everyone to go win his first stage win ever.
With 99 laps to go (see what I did there, 99 laps to go, Tommy is number 99), Martins was 28th and a lap down, the 20 of Bell was in the lead. With 75 laps to go, the 7 of Justin Allgaier spun out in the grass and brought the caution out.
With 68 laps to go, the 19 of Brandon Jones and the 00 of Cole Custer wrecked hard to bring the caution out. No one knew if they had enough fuel to get to the end of the race. On lap 151, Martins was 22nd and still down a lap. With 10 laps to go, the caution comes out for the 51 of Clements stalling on pit road because he ran out of gas.
At the end of the race, out of 200 laps, the 18 of Kyle Busch won the race, as Martins finished 19th and gets back to back top 20's for the first time.
