On the 24th of September, part-time NASCAR driver Justin Marks, announced that he would be making his last NASCAR start forever in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and in the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series on the 29th of September and the 30th of September.
Really looking forward to what will be my last ever weekend competing in @NASCAR. Double duty with @CGRnascar and @premiummotrspts in NXS and Cup. Lucky to have had all the opportunities I've had in 10+ years. Gonna have some fun and leave it all out there!!— Justin Marks (@JustinMarksDG) September 24, 2018
Justin got some damage in practice.
Justin Marks, driver of the 42 NASCAR Xfinity Series for Chip Gannasi Racing part-time, started 4th at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval as the 22 of Austin Cindric started on the pole.
On lap 2/55, the caution came out for the 36 of Alex Labbe, he had stopped on the racetrack because he broke a drive shaft. On lap 7, the 60 of Ty Majeski spun around, but no caution. Marks was 6th. With 2 laps to go in the first stage, the 22 of Cindric got a little loose and spun, which let the 21 of Daniel Hemric pass him for the lead. At the end of stage one, lap 16/55, Marks finished 5th but didn't get any points because he's not full-time, as the 21 of Hemric won the stage.
After pitting following that stage, Marks came out second and gained two spots. On lap 18, the 15 of Katherine Legge spun out in the grass, but no caution. With two laps to go in the second stage, the 22 of Cindric hits the 7 of Justin Allgaier a little to make him go spinning around, and the 39 of Ryan Sieg goes right into Allgaier. At the end of stage two, lap 31, Marks finishes 14th as the 20 of Christopher Bell wins the stage.
With 22 laps to go, the caution comes out for the 11 of Ryan Truex, 5 of Michael Annett, 60 of Ty Majeski, 3 of Brendan Gaughan, and a few others wrecking. On lap 40, the caution comes out for a bumper bar on the track. With 10 laps to go, while second, the 21 of Hemric goes over the grass in the chicane and has to stop to serve the penalty. At the end of the race, out of 55 laps, Marks finishes 2nd in his last ever NASCAR Xfinity race, as the 98 of Chase Briscoe wins the race.
They talked to Marks after the race, here is what was said:
Kelly (reporter): "In his last ever NASCAR Xfinity series race, Justin Marks comes up second, I know it's just a little bit short of the ultimate goal, but what's the feeling at the end of this one?"
Justin: "Well, I'm proud. I'm proud of this team. Uh, Chip Ganassi Racing, really I'm just so fortunate to have gotten the opportunity that I've gotten. You know, I work hard to bring sponsors. I just haven't had a lot of opportunities in my career to be a big paid race car driver. So, that's awesome for a company like Chip Ganassi Racing to take a chance on me. We got them a win and we finished my career with a second place finish. So, um, I'm really happy about that. Everyone on this Chevy accessories team did a really great job all weekend, and this track was just such an unknown for everybody, but uh, I think NASCAR did a great job at these and these teams did a great job and it was an awesome race, can't wait for tomorrow."
Kelly: "There were moments there towards the end you were closing in on the 98, what more did you need there?"
Justin: "Yeah. He was just a little better than me. Just getting off the corners, just was a little bit better forward drive, and kind of a better long run car. I mean, I didn't think we anticipated there was going to be any long runs in this race, so I think everyone kinda went to the shorter runs in their setups. But, he did a phenomenal job, I tried to put as much pressure on him as possible. But, he's a dirt racer and won a road race - that's a pretty well rounded driver. So, I'm really happy for him, he did a great job. We just needed a little bit more for a drive."
Kelly: "Congrats on a great Xfinity Series career, we look forward to tomorrow."
Justin: "Awesome. Thank you."
