Cole Whitt, driver of the 72 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series for TriStar Motorsports part-time, started 33 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval as the 41 of Kurt Busch started on the pole.
On lap 8/109, the 42 of Kyle Larson passed the 41 of Busch for the lead. On lap 14, the caution came out for the 51 of Stanton Barrett hitting the wall. When they start going, Whitt is 34th. At the end of the first stage, lap 26, Whitt finishes 28th as the 42 of Larson wins the stage.
On lap 34, the 15 of Justin Marks went spinning around, but no caution. On lap 36, the 2 of Brad Keselowski hits the wall, but no caution. Whitt is 32nd. On lap 46, the 24 of William Byron had issues, and the 10 of Aric Almirola tried to go around him, but hit the wall, no caution. On lap 49, the 2 of Keselowski and the 78 of Martin Truex Jr spun around, no caution. At the end of the second stage, lap 51, Whitt finishes 38th as the 12 of Ryan Blaney wins the stage.
On lap 60, the caution came out for the 3 of Austin Dillon and the 37 of Chris Buescher wrecking. On lap 66, the caution came out again for the 3 of Dillon wrecking. On lap 69, the caution comes out for two different wrecks, the 37 of Buescher wrecks into the wall and takes a piece of the wall with him, and the 10 of Almirola goes spinning in the grass. On lap 73, Whitt is 34th. On lap 76, the 23 of JJ Yeley goes spinning in the grass and carries a piece of the banner on the front of his car, but no caution.
With 8 laps to go, the caution comes out for the 17 of Ricky Stenhouse Jr wrecking into the wall. On the restart, lap 103, the red flag comes out for a bunch of guys wrecking into the wall. Including: 2 of Keselowski, 42 of Larson, 21 of Paul Menard, 24 of Byron, 6 of Trevor Bayne, 18 of Kyle Busch, 8 of Daniel Hemric, 10 of Almirola, 38 of David Ragan, 7 of Ross Chastain, and a few others collected as well.
On the last lap almost to the finish line, the 78 of Truex is in the lead and the 48 of Jimmie Johnson is second, they go through the chicane, Johnson locks his tires up, and spins out collecting Truex with him! The 12 of Blaney goes on to win the race.
At the end of the race, out of 109 laps, Whitt goes on to finish in 20th position, as the 12 of Blaney wins the race. What a race for TriStar Motorsports and Cole Whitt, this is the kind of finish this team deserves. TriStar Motorsports have been doing an excellent job all year!
