June 11/15 Hello, Race Fans! My name is Katie Williams. I was born, raised and still live in Gillette, WY. Growing up on the ranch, I’m the only one in my family who became interested in racing. I’m also a horsewoman, competing in barrel racing. I’ve been riding horses since the age of 7. Oddly enough, that is when I also became a NASCAR fan. I guess I had a need for speed back then. Most people think NASCAR is just making a bunch of left turns but it’s really more than that if you take the time to study the sport.
I first discovered NASCAR back in 1991 on the old TNN network. I would wait for music videos to come on and got interested in the cars in the process. At that time, I didn’t even know what a crew chief was! As I grew up, I pursued other interests but eventually returned to being a NASCAR fan when I was channel surfing one night and discovered the SPEED channel during the 2011-2012 offseason. I have been hooked ever since.
I didn’t decide I wanted to pursue a career in motorsports until the summer of 2012. I completed Motorsports Management with Sports Management Worldwide in 2013. Taking this course, I was able to conduct a couple of interviews. I hope to conduct more as I make the move up the media ladder. I’m also very fortunate to be a media consultant for the TV show Raceline. While at Kansas Speedway this year, I helped them get more recognition!
In my early years, I didn’t know who many of the drivers were, so I never rooted for anyone. I actually never was a die-hard fan of any driver, but of the race teams. I became a Hendrick Motorsports fan when my love of NASCAR was rediscovered. I was in awe of their work ethic and I try to emulate that when I compete in rodeo. Being from the west and this team being based in Denver, I’m also fond of Furniture Row Racing.
Outside of racing, I enjoy rodeoing, riding horses, and I also keep track of my own equine sports stats. I also like to swim, travel and play simulation games.
